The AR15 is the semi-automatic rifle that gave birth to the M16 military rifle and its lighter derivative, the M4. The AR15 is the original automatic developed by the company ArmaLite which was then sold to the company Colt. From 1963, the name AR-15 defines the semi-automatic rifles.

Used by the American special forces since 1994, the Colt M4 is an American military rifle which is in itself a light AR-15.

Resulting from a difficult development, the M16 is the military version of the AR15, a rifle completed by Armalite in 1958. The M16 is the standard assault rifle of the U.S. Army. Currently the U.S. Army uses the A4 version.
